To demonstrate competency in assessment and evaluation, I would like to present the final paper I wrote for the Quantitative Analysis in College Student Affairs class. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the students' quality of effort and the attainment of course objectives in an Introduction to Social Work class at Whittier College.  In this paper I wrote the following statement and would like to include because I believe it captures my growth in this competency area.

"This statistics class, especially this project, has challenged me to think in a different way, even use a new form of language. This project has reaffirmed my belief that statistics, qualitative and quantitative, have a meaningful and substantial impact in our work. Statistics can greatly contribute to programmatic and institutional change. However this class also taught me that statistics and numbers may be manipulated and therefore need to be 'handled with care.' I enjoyed learning about the potential our profession has to create validity and credibility by using qualitative research. "

In the Learning in the Co-curriculum class,  we were required to read Pascarella and Terenzini's How College Affect Students and discuss the impact that the book may have on  programs, policies, environments, and procedures within our discipline, department, and area of influence. I chose to analyze selected research findings that impact the development and growth and programs that seek to help students develop cultural sensitivity and competence.  I also outlined how research can help me support underrepresented, and traditional students alike, succeed in an increasingly diverse and pluralistic society.

I would like to present this paper as evidence of my ability to read with understanding the published research on higher education.
