Cecilia’s Philosophy of Student Affairs

The journey is the reward. I came across this Taoist proverb in a time in my life in which I needed not only to reflect on my educational journey, but in which I also needed to integrate all of the experiences in my life that led me to this journey—college graduation. These simple but wise words helped me to do just that and more; it helped me develop a philosophy that I constantly refer to and put in to practice in my student affairs career.

It is my belief that as an educator, I have the responsibility to ensure that all students are given the opportunity to embark in any journey they choose. Moreover, it is my commitment and passion to ensure that the students’ journey is fulfilling, meaningful, rewarding, educational, and applicable to their lives beyond college. I attempt to do this by taking advantage of teachable moments and providing students with tools that will make them change agents in the world and consequently seek better opportunities for themselves and for others as well.

My commitment to life long learning will continue to provide me with options to embark in an array of journeys, to contribute to the field, and most importantly, empower others to join me in my journey to develop students and leaders. My journey was rewarding because of people who took the time to mentor me and who believed in me. My hope is that my biggest accomplishment as a student affairs professional is to make someone’s journey rewarding and full of experiences that will enable them to take their education beyond hanging a degree on a wall and utilize it to create paths for different, challenging, and inclusive journeys.
